How to Choose the Right MCB for Your Home
Published on November 9, 2025

What is an MCB?
An MCB is an automatic switch that interrupts an electrical circuit during an abnormal condition, such as an overload or short circuit. It is more reliable and faster than a traditional fuse and can be reset manually.
1. Check the Ampere (A) Rating
The most important factor is the current rating, measured in Amperes (A). This should match the load of the circuit it is protecting. Common ratings are 6A (for lighting), 16A (for outlets), and 32A (for heavy appliances like air conditioners).
2. Number of Poles
You need to choose the correct number of poles for your wiring:
- Single Pole (SP): For single-phase circuits, protecting only the phase wire.
- Double Pole (DP): For single-phase, protecting both phase and neutral.
- Three Pole (TP): For three-phase circuits, protecting all three phases.
- Four Pole (FP): For three-phase + neutral circuits.
3. Tripping Curve (Type)
The tripping curve defines how quickly the MCB will trip. For homes, you almost always want Type B, which is designed for standard residential loads like lights, fans, and outlets.
